Le verbe savoir (Savoir vs. Connaître)
J'AI COMPRIS
The COI (complément d’object indirect):Can only be used for persons and are those people in a sentence to whom the action of the verb occurs. (à qui... to whom)
Note: Not like the COD which is the person or thing that receives the action of a verb in a sentence.
Example “Joseph speaks to Marie about the cake.” “Joseph” is the subject because he is the one doing the action and “Marie” is the indirect object because it is to whom Joseph is speaking TO.
French has a similar pattern, it is easy to pick out what word is the indirect object. Most sentences in both languages are constructed in the order of Subject-Verb-Preposition-Indirect Object.
Note: When deciding between direct and indirect objects, the general rule is that if the person is preceded by the preposition “à”, that person is an indirect object.
Just like in English, we can substitute the objects of a sentence with pronouns, so that we say “Joseph speaks to her.” although the word “Marie” must have been mentioned before to be understood. In French, of course, the indirect object pronouns must agree in gender and number!
The main difference between French and English is that when you substitute a COI pronoun for a indirect object noun, the order in French changes to Subject-Indirect Object-Verb.
Example: I WRITE TO MY MOM - JE LUI ÉCRIS.
Note: Not like the COD which is the person or thing that receives the action of a verb in a sentence.
