Le verbe sortirThe verbs SORTIR and PARTIR are both ÊTRE verbs. Here you see how Sortir (to go out, get out) and Partir (to leave) are conjugated. Please take NOTES on the difference of using the auxiliary verbs AVOIR and ÊTRE!
FYI! Dormir conjugates with the same pattern but is uses AVOIR for the PC. |
Le verbe partirPRACTICE:
1. Take Notes from page 132 especially the ALLER VOIR note 2. DO activity 1 on page 132. 3. Create your own sentences using Sortir and Partir, like in the example above. |
Before beginning with être...
The SAME STEPS you used when creating the PC with AVOIR will be used with ÊTRE!
What does that mean Mme Beck?
Step 1: Choose the SUBJECT PRONOUN that you will be speaking about!
Step 2: Your auxiliary verb (helping verb) is now ÊTRE! (How do I know when to use ÊTRE instead of AVOIR ... more on that as you scroll down this page.)
Step 3: Change the verb (secondary verb) to the PP.
STEP 4!!!! Remember: When you use “être”, the past participle agrees in gender and number with the subject (known as L'ACCORD in French). An extra video has been added to explain this, after you learn about my favorite friends DR. & MRS. VANDERTRAMPP. We will review this in class!

thee famous dr. & mrs. vandertrampp
Before understanding STEP 4: L'ACCORD (Gender and Number agreement with être verbs in the PC... you must know which verbs belong to this group. An acronym/mnemonic has been created to help you. An acronym is an abbreviation, used as a word, which is formed from the initial components in a phrase or a word. A mnemonic is a device such as a pattern of letters, ideas, or associations that assists in remembering something.
the question still remains ...Mme Beck, HOW DO I KNOW WHICH VERBS USE ÊTRE?
1. You learn the mnemonic DR. & MRS. VANDERTRAMPP 2. The MORE in DEPTH explanation is that the verbs used with être are mostly considered to be INTRANSITIVE VERBS. WHAT??? I have added a video that everyone MUST watch. Transitive and intransitive refer to whether or not a verb can be followed by an object. Transitivity has to do with the meaning of the verb.
First, let us look at transitive verbs. For a verb to be transitive, the verb must have an object. An example of a transitive verb is the verb " entendre " <<to hear>>. The verb " entendre " <<to hear>> always takes an object, because one always hears something or someone. For example, in the sentence " J'entends le téléphone " <<I hear the telephone>>, " le téléphone " <<the telephone>> is the direct object of the verb " entends " <<hear>>. Transitive verbs always form " passé composé " (simple past) with the verb " avoir " <<to have>>. For example, if we changed the previous sentence to " passé composé " (simple past), we would say " J'ai entendu le téléphone " <<I heard the telephone>>. Now, let us look at intransitive verbs. For a verb to be intransitive, the verb cannot have an object. An example of an intransitive verb is the verb " naître" or to be born. The verb " naître " never takes an object, because one cannot <<born>> something. For example, in the sentence " Il nait en bonne santé " <<He was born healthy>>, " en bonne santé " <<healthy>> is not an object. Rather, it is an adverb which is modifying the verb " naître " <<to be born>>. Intransitive verbs normally form " passé composé " (simple past) with the verb " être " <<to be>>. For example, if we changed the previous sentence to " passé composé " (simple past), we would say " Il est né en santé " <<He was born healthy.>> thee extra video(s) ... agreement gender and numberREVIEW PAGE 133
