Note: Many of you remember the classroom example. When your parent asks you to grab THE keys (definite - you know which key) verses grab a key (indefinite - you are clueless of which key). Another help can be indefinite spelt UNdefinite for UN/UNE.
Note: Please take notes about professions and how to express professions in French. We will be learning and reviewing this in Unité 1. |

- Expression Impersonelle
Impersonal expressions are those which do not have a specific subject. In grammatical terms, "impersonal" means invariable by grammatical person. There are a few things you need to know about French impersonal expressions:
- The French impersonal subject is either il or ce, whereas the English impersonal subject is "it."
- Il est and C'est means: It is! - However Il est + adjectives and C'est + article noun.
- Ce sont refers to Those are
- Il y a is There is but also means There are.
Practice: Il y a
Copy Vocabulary and Translate in English (p.13) Qu'est-ce qu'il y a ...? Il y a ... Il n'y a pas ... Est-ce qu'il y a ...? |
Practice: C'est

Subject-Verb Agreement - L'Accord One of the things that makes the French language so trying at times is l’accord. Agreement in gender, number and person between subjects and verbs, adjectives, nouns, articles, pronouns, etc. We have this in English. You wouldn't say "I eats". This is incorrect. You say "I eat". Thus the subject "I" agrees with the verb "eat". In French, your subject has to agree with the verb. Even when you have NE...PAS. You would say, "Je mange". For the negative form, you would say "Je NE mange PAS. |
- à + Definite Articles - DE + Definite Articles
Practice: À vs. De
Note: You only contract à and de with the masculine definite article.

Please write out 4 sentences in French from the worksheet.

- Jouer à - Jouer de

Practice: Jouer à vs. Jouer de
Copy: jouer à + sport, game jouer de + musical instrument
This is a very important worksheet. This worksheet will introduce you to the verb FAIRE that you already know. However, FAIRE will be used in expressions. Pay close attention. We will be revisiting this worksheet in Unité 1 and Unité 6.

Les adjectifs possessifs
Possessive adjectives are the words used to indicate to whom or to what something belongs. In French, they agree with the following noun. But in the plural, there is no difference between masculine and feminine.
